A year ago, on April 6, 2020, the Department for Digital Transformation (Minister Paola Pisano) call for technologies to counter the spread of Covid19 took place. Foodchain, represented by CEO Marco Vitale, had then offered free use of its platform for tracking/traceability of the medical device such as swabs used in the infection monitoring campaign. Today, March 30, 2021, we are concerned to learn of the investigation on the falsification of data of contagions in Sicily where "it was attempted to [...] avoid the passage of the entire Region or some of its areas in the orange or red zone". The traceability of swabs in the blockchain would have allowed not only to avoid the use of false or counterfeit devices but also to verify that the number of samples collected matched the number of swabs performed, ensuring daily the correct indication of positive cases noted within a distributed public database, not alterable and aimed at protecting public health.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy represents one of the most effective and promising tools for metabolomic fingerprinting of food, which is increasingly used to tackle food frauds. The ability to derive information about an agri-food product directly from its metabolomic profile makes it possible to imagine such systems as adjuvants to the certification system currently in use, making the latter even more robust and resistant to fraud attempts, also supported with blockchain-based information technologies. Blockchain is not a stand-alone technology, but can, combined with other technologies, be a catalyst for the digital transformation of the agri-food sector. Article by Marica Antonicelli, Maurizio Triggiani, Gina Musio, Mario Latronico, Piero Mastrorilli, Vito Gallo of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Land, Building and Chemical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of the Politecnico di Bari.

Here are the key points of CEO Marco Vitale's intervention at today's Assintel and Osservatorio Digital Innovation webinar: blockchain and traceability in the agrifood supply chain. - Foodchain was among the first to apply blockchain to the agribusiness sector. Today it is operational with 10+ projects in being, and as many in development. - Blockchain means accessibility, data sharing, decentralization, integrity. Trust lies in the protocol and becomes verification, everyone must be able to independently verify. - To do traceability notarization via smart-contract is not enough. This data must be linked and interconnected. Thanks to Roberto Palazzetti and Rosario Minasola for organizing this event, to Chiara Corbo of the SmartAgrifood Observatory and Giacomo Vella of the Blockchain & DLT Observatory for their insightful remarks and for the work they carry out with passion at the Observatory. Finally, best wishes to Andrea Cruciani, CEO of our partner Agricolus S.r.l. and the whole team for the incredible results obtained, the projects and the continuous research they conduct.

Fishing, tourism and sustainability. With the Flagchain project our intent is to help the consumer/tourist to make a more sustainable and conscious choice. With blockchain we make them more independent in their choices. Resilience is a key word. There is a strong need to positively reorganize the fishing sector: by exploiting the power of digitalization we improve the management of supply chain data. Basic technological infrastructure. Our task at local level is to provide tourism infrastructures with new tools, such as a public blockchain, that allow for the clear organization of supply chain/micro-sector data, which today is too scattered. Local politics voice for circularity. There is a strong need to involve public and private actors to fully exploit the territory and also succeed in involving the consumer/tourist. 📻 Listen to the last episode of Disintermedium, the tech lounge hosted by Laura Cappello with Riccardo Cocco, guests: Michele D'Ambrosio (Flagchain), Alessandro Bartolucci (BeSafe Rate), Giuseppe di Iorio (Hotel Palazzo Manfredi), Domingo Iudice (Brainpull, Pescaria).

Here is the Eighth Edition of the Report of the Osservatorio Immagino and GS1 Italy - "Product labels tell the story of Italian consumption". Sustainability as a central theme of the third millennium. How have the efforts of companies been communicated on the product labels that reach the homes of Italians? > More than 1,127 products presented on pack references to the "supply chain" and "traceability". This basket achieved a strong growth in sales (+15.2% compared to the previous 12 months), particularly in some product categories, such as sliced meats, UHT milk, third-process beef, rusks and semolina pasta. Transparency, sustainability, ethics and traceability. Blockchain technology offers a real competitive advantage to agri-food companies that decide to focus on these assets and opens up a world of possible storytelling to communicate directly to the final consumer all their values, processes, and good practices within the supply chain.

This is the social media era where information overshare is the norm and the expectation. According to FMI- The Food Industry Association, 81% of consumers say transparency is important when purchasing F&B products. 75% of consumers demand full transparency from the brands they buy from. Especially Millennials and GenZ prefer to choose food products that "have nothing to hide." Transparency for consumers today means having the tools and capabilities to understand a company’s values, ethics and methods - a commitment that companies will be able to provide to more and more consumers with the right technology. #blockchain

2020 was a mind-blowing year for all of us, but the experimentation and desire to innovate never stopped. At Foodchain, we have high expectations for 2021. We expect a renaissance and are convinced that the digital transition is coming! Three pillars of blockchain for agrifood: transparency, traceability, trust. We want more transparency in food ecosystems, less counterfeiting thanks to the traceability of agrifood products, less waste along all supply chains and, at the same time, more consumer trust in companies and the quality of the products they buy. What are your expectations?

Interesting insights provided by John G. Keogh in his latest article, "Top 6 Predictions for 2021 - Food Ecosystems". The current global food ecosystem causes enormous ecological damage, with nearly 90% of animals at risk of losing part of their habitat by 2050 (The Guardian). Unless the food industry is transformed, changing what individuals eat and how food is produced, the world will face a severe loss in #biodiversity. We must exploit all the technological means at our disposal to transform this dynamic new ecosystem: we need more #transparency, #traceability, #trust and #accountability from companies.

Blockchain for an intelligent and interactive food supply chain - Marco Vitale was live for the webinar "Made in Italy not only the place where production takes place: can digital help the protection of Made in Italy and consumers?”. "If Made in Italy was a brand it would be in third place, together with Coca Cola and Visa. Instead, today it shows shocking numbers: for each exported product there are in fact 3 fakes in circulation". Counterfeiting steals more than 600 billion dollars from the Made in Italy products, and the supply chain inefficiencies result in more than 1.3 billion tons of wasted food. In a supply chain where information flows quickly and safely, the blockchain facilitates the establishment of an innovative mechanism of efficiency, able to guarantee the transparency of transactions, the integrity of the data and its non-modifiability. With a smart label with QrCode, we are able to show the efforts of the supply chain to the final consumer, who can finally verify how the product was composed, what steps and what processes the actors in the supply chain have put in place to bring the product on the shelves and on our tables, in total transparency.

More than 4 thousand tons of wheat registered as Apulian but actually purchased by the French company Cavac have aroused suspicion about the Italian company De Cecco, now under investigation for fraud. The origin would have changed, making the wheat appear as Apulian, and therefore Italian, without adequate communication to the consumer on the label. A real mockery to the detriment of the consumer and all Made in Italy brand. One of the appeals of the blockchain is to guarantee the immutability and integrity of the data that, once inserted in blockchain, can no longer be altered, it is immutable. Preventing scenarios like these from happening. While on the one hand, the blockchain cannot prevent companies from lying about the data entered, on the other hand, it is a technology that places a strong emphasis on transparency and responsibility of those who use it: if you cheat, the fraud will remain forever in the blockchain, visible to all. #foodchain #traceability #blockchain #labelling #fraud #food security #madeinitaly

Blockchain traceability of the textile supply chain: Marco Vitale, guest speaker yesterday at the webinar "The new possibilities offered by blockchain technologies and the advantages for SMEs" conducted with great enthusiasm by Irene Colombo and promoted by PID of Como-Lecco Chamber of Commerce "Together for development, not only technology". What is the appeal for companies? Today we want more transparency, single product uniqueness, data integrity, guarantee and security in front of a great complexity in supply chain controls. We want to reduce environmental impact, eliminate fraud and counterfeiting in the global market and increase the perception of product value. But what tools are available to the consumer who wants to verify? How can they perceive the quality of the product value if they do not see the effort made by the players in the supply chain? With blockchain we strengthen the exchange of information within the supply chain and improve environmental, energy and economic sustainability. At the same time, we deliver the product's history to the consumer through a unique id (QRcode). Because it is important to ensure that everyone can verify. The year 2020 has been a turbulent year for all of us, but experimentation and the desire to innovate have never stopped. In 2021? We expect a renaissance, the digital transition is coming! #Textilechain #foodchain

"The need to know the origin of food has increased and companies have begun to fully understand it: traceability, which is already extremely important for companies, has become the priority with the Covid-19. To avoid any crisis of trust on the part of the end consumer, all traceability tools have therefore become essential". Chiara Corbo, Coordinator and Researcher of the Smart Agrifood Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, declared this and we couldn't agree more: companies need digital tools to guarantee the traceability of their products and to protect themselves against counterfeiting, and consumers need ways to consult the steps of the supply chain in total transparency, from the field to the table. We are working in the right direction. 🚀

"The more a company wants to demonstrate transparency, the more it needs the blockchain. The core of our offer to achieve transparency is a model: we offer the best practices for the whole agrifood sector that allow creating a new digitalized supply chain. With blockchain, each company is well identified within the supply chain and is responsible for its activity and the information it includes in the blockchain. The more transparent a company is, the more the network rewards it: it gets a discount on subsequent transactions. After years of studies and validations, we are finally about to announce a concrete case applied to a district". 👉 minute 32 to review the speech by Davide Costa, Foodchain co-founder. Porcini Made in Italy, but actually, coming from Bulgaria? Thousands of food products from an unknown origin? The lack of traceability is one of the main reasons for the seizure of food products on the national territory. Even more serious and unfortunately common are the false evocations and infringements on labelling. Recently almost 600,000 kg of food products worth over 94 thousand euros have been seized on Italian territory. With blockchain technology we can stop the "fake supply chain" and guarantee the traceability of all agrifood products, protecting agrifood companies from counterfeiting and assuring consumers the certainty of what they are buying. #madeinitaly #food #fakefood #counterfeiting #fraud #labelling

The figures from the Waste Watcher Observatory speak for themselves: in Europe, the cost of food waste is rising to over 143 billion euros and every year 88 million tonnes of food, about 20% of all food produced, is thrown away... At the same time more than 820 million people on the planet have no food. There is a strong moral need to create new systems to reduce food waste and come up against people in need. That's why we created together with Lab00 Regusto and Synesthesia SpesaSospesa.org, the first digital platform secured by blockchain for the sale and donation of food! #blockchain #waste #foodawareness #foodwaste

"Three years ago at the most important technology event in Singapore I presented Foodchain. There was a lot of amazement and extreme interest in seeing how the blockchain could be used in an area other than fintech. Today it is now almost normal to use this technology in the food industry. This means only 2 things. The first is that the process is now unstoppable, the second is that our dream started back in 2012 has come true! - Marco Vitale, CEO of Foodchain. Blockchain can do great things for the food industry and we have come a long way! #traceability #madeinitaly

"Born in 1986, Davide Costa, co-founder of #Foodchain, approached technology when he secretly lurked on his father's Apple computer back in 1992. After graduating in computer engineering, in 2012 he moved to Silicon Valley and began his training at VMware, a leading company in cloud computing and virtualization. Also in December of the same year, he decides to abandon the "perfect job" and return to Turin and he creates his first start-up within the I3P Incubator. Here he approaches the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain and in 2012 he meets engineer Marco Vitale on BitcoinTalk.org forum".

Riseria Masinari is among the companies that works, with the support of Regione Lombardia, on new techniques of rice sowing. 🌾 Masinari is daily engaged in refining solutions able to improve the quality of the product by giving it unique characteristics, such as being free of arsenic, which would make it suitable also for children's nutrition. 👶 From the need to enhance the unique characteristics of the product, the collaboration with #Foodchain powered by Quadrans Foundation was born. Giuseppe Zafferoni Masinari comments: "The blockchain ⛓ system is transparent in identifying any step of the culture under examination and this represents an important strength for #consumers. Documenting all the steps and entering a whole series of data in the Foodchain software leads, as a positive externality, to the creation of a database and a deep analysis of processes that can be definitively optimized". All data (composition, processes, locations) can be browsed by scanning the QRcode below.

New Decree: no 'state secret' about foreign foods. A historical result for #Coldiretti: this is how we protect the 100% Italian supply chains and the made in Italy products. The decree provides that the Ministry of Health will make available through the publication on the website (every six months) in the section "Transparent Administration” of all data on food, feed and animals for consumption coming from the Union and non-EU countries.

Congratulations to our Regusto's colleagues for the results obtained so far: "Over 12,000 kg of food purchased. More than 11,500 kg of food donated. Over 14,000 non-food products (personal hygiene, home hygiene, diapers, etc.) donated and sold. Each passage of food and money is traced and certified in blockchain through our Platform. Positive impacts and results that we are achieving thanks to all our partners, sponsors and supporters who continue to commit and believe with us. The campaign www.spesasospesa.org continues until September 30!"

The Italian Sounding is likely to cause serious damage to the reputation and image of Made in Italy products perceived in the world, associating poor products - which have nothing Italian - to the delicacies coming from the peninsula. It is not surprising that the countries where fake products are more widespread are usually the same countries where the demand for Made in Italy is stronger: USA, Canada, China, Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Belarus, Argentina, Brazil and, above all, Russia. To protect the quality of our products, it is in our interest to provide companies with the necessary tools to ensure the traceability of their products, protecting them from counterfeiting and fraud and at the same time keeping businesses and consumers safe.

Blockchain technology is able to revolutionize the agricultural sector: it allows tracking the origin of food and thus helps to create reliable food supply chains and strengthen, at the same time, trust between producers and consumers. As a reliable method of data storage, it facilitates the use of data-driven technologies towards increasingly smart agriculture. What are the advantages of adopting Foodchain for producers?

Food safety practices are, in Italy, much more restrictive than abroad, we represent an excellence. Can blockchain technology create new value and represent an opportunity to improve our country? Foodchain was born from the need to overcome the phenomenon of Italian Sounding and protect Made in Italy products, a crucial export outlet for Italy. Just think that out of 3 products sold abroad, 2 are counterfeit. A complete traceability would reduce unfair competition and at the same time increase consumer trust. If previously the brand carried trust, now it is no longer so, now transparency, together with sustainability and ethics, are the key values identified by consumers. These are some interesting insights from yesterday's Think4Food event with the moderation of Francesco Castellana (Future Food Institute) together with Chiara Faenza from Coop Italia, Giuseppe Coletti, CEO of Authentico and Marco Vitale, CEO of Foodchain.

According to Coldiretti, more than 8 Italians out of 10 (81%) seize the opportunity of the good season to take part in the traditional barbecue of Ferragosto, one of the most rooted passions among Italians! The absolute majority prefer meat-based grills (62%), but is the meat supply chain, especially beef, safe? Unfortunately, its vulnerabilities have already emerged over time (you may remember the "Horsemeat" scandal in 2013), and the supply chain is still strongly threatened by fraud and counterfeiting. We have the necessary tools at our disposal to more easily detect fraud in beef products and facilitate greater protection for consumers and the industry as a whole in the future. Happy Mid-August from Foodchain, and grill safely!

The awareness of traceability is growing: 89% of Italians in the post COVID19 will buy more foods whose label makes evident origin, ingredients and processing. More millennials (86.7%), graduates (86.3%) and low incomes (94.6%) will do so; in any case, traceability will increasingly impose itself as a general regulatory criterion for new food consumption. We're working in the right direction! #Foodchain #traceability

Europe approves Italy's proposal on battery-based labelling: it rewards a system for consumer protection and promotes proper nutrition education. How does it work? Inside the "battery" you will find the percentage of Kcal, fats, saturated fats, sugars and salt contained in the single portion compared to the recommended daily dose. Italy also asks that the obligation to indicate the origin of raw materials on food labels be extended to ALL foods, starting with a series of products on which it has already been tested in Italy such as milk, cheese, processed meat, pasta, rice and tomato derivatives. For consumers, we want clear labels, containing reliable information and intelligent packaging, designed to be helpful when buying 📲, without deceiving them. #foodchain #traceability #qrcode #origin #ingredients #labelling #farmtofork #coldiretti #eu

NEW UPDATES for the FLAGCHAIN project! 🐟 The tests on our platform and the shooting for the debut video of the local catch traceability project Flagchain started yesterday. With Flagchain we want to create a public blockchain infrastructure (on the Quadrans Foundation network), which regulates and organises the traceability of local catch through the use of decentralised applications in collaboration with local fisheries action groups including FLAG Pesca Flegrea. It is important to involve the actors of the whole fish supply chain - fishermen, fishmongers, restaurateurs - in order to implement a system for processing the traceability data of the supply chain itself, and at the same time, deliver to the consumer the "history" of the product (origin, catch and farming techniques, processes undergone, transport, conservation). Massimiliano Agata, Lead Developer for the Flagchain platform, Michele D'Ambrosio, representative of the cooperation project for FLAG Ischia, the fisherman Domenico Schiano, and the Michelin-starred chef Pasquale Palamaro of the Ristorante Indaco, who is confident that consumers will be intrigued by this new tool to find their way towards authentic local products.

Consumerismo and Authentico together to create an alliance between consumers and businesses and start a real task force against fake Italian products. 🇮🇹 Parmesan, Zottarella, Salami, Monticino, Regianito, Barollo, Macaroni, Monticella, San Marzani, Vinocella, are just some of the creative names that evoke famous Italian products. It is estimated that at least 2 out of 3 products sold abroad are imitations. Thanks to this new app 📲 consumers will able to report imitations and fake Italian products in real-time. Pay attention to "Ham, Wines, Oil, Cheese and Pasta among the most counterfeit products. The consumer is often unsuspectingly deceived by misleading information on the packaging or attractive graphics and buys products, even online, which could undermine the food safety and consequently their health" - says Pino Coletti, CEO Authentico.

The guests of the sixth webinar organized by TheFoodCons answered the question: is the Italian agrifood industry ready to adopt the blockchain technology? On the "corporate" side: Marco Vitale, CEO of Foodchain, the pioneer in the application of blockchain tech to the food industry, Giuseppe Perrone, Head of Blockchain Hub Mediterraneo at EY, Walfredo della Gherardesca (Genuine Way), Gianpaolo Sara (Euranet); on the “users" side: Elena Eloisa Albertini Vice-President of the Red Orange of Sicily consortium and Valentina Avantaggiato (Pralina Srl) who talked about the benefits and advantages of applying Foodchain's blockchain tech to soups #LeBiodiverse. 🍵 It came out that all the guests agree that the blockchain for traceability must be public to ensure the maximum transparency to consumers, who are evolving, becoming more and more conscious. So, we think that the blockchain can accelerate this evolution, providing consumers with the tools 📲 they need to understand the history of a product and companies with a new way to communicate, as well as a powerful marketing tool that can, yes! guarantee a competitive advantage.

The Decree on sausages and cold cuts requires producers to indicate legibly on labels the information relating to the country of birth, rearing and slaughter of the animal. When the meat comes from pigs born, reared and slaughtered in the same country, the indication of origin may appear in the form: 'Origin: (name of the country)'. The wording "100% Italian" will, therefore, be used ONLY when the meat comes from pigs born, reared, slaughtered and processed in Italy; this without taking anything away from the other products, but to protect our Made in Italy, preventing, for example, that a product only stuffed in Italy is defined as 100% Italian. 🇮🇹 We are waiting for the law and we are convinced that this is a very important step towards conscious consumption: consumers must have clear information, no more misunderstandings... #labelling #eu #blockchain #traceability #foodchain #madeinitaly #transparency

Let's recap on TRAME, the TOP DIGITEX project born within the Fashiontech Call for Proposals of Regione Lombardia with partners Foodchain, Tessitura Uboldi Luigi Srl and Sait Srl. We announced the victory of the call for proposals at the beginning of the year (January 2020). After that we met several times with the partner companies to reach together a single goal: the environmental, energy and economic sustainability of the textile sector through traceability and document management thanks to blockchain technology. In mid-February 2020, the kick-off took place that highlighted the needs, challenges and technical characteristics needed in the different phases along the textile supply chain; then the analysis for the integration of IOT devices, RFID systems and blockchain technology started. Today, 16th June 2020, the technical meeting with Marco Vitale and Matteo Torri took place: they talked about blockchain application to the textile sector, traceability and security. There will be new updates next week, when we will meet with the other project partners. #staytuned

No surprise: the presence of the Italian flag and the words "100% Italian" are among the levers of the success of the products sold in the post-emergency period - as a study by the Osservatorio Immagino confirms and La Repubblica reports. But does what is labelled as 100% Italian really Italian? Foodchain wants to provide the necessary tools to achieve traceability of materials and products by guaranteeing their origin, attributes and compliance with standards, while at the same time forcing accountability throughout the agrifood supplychain.

Today we are talking about labelling, product origin and clothing. Under the judgment of the Court of Cassation here is a particular case in which the raw materials were Italian, but the packaging of the garments was entirely carried out in Bulgaria. On the label, the Italian flag and the misleading wording "Fabric Made in Italy". (source: https://bit.ly/2whfk5s) Saying "100% Italian", "100% made in Italy", "100% Italy", "all Italian" and displaying the national symbol when only the raw material is Italian but the packaging took place abroad is a crime. The Court of Cassation ruled in this way (no. 10912/2020 of April 1, 2020). Playing on misunderstandings can no longer be tolerated. We want a transparent, sustainable and fully traceable textile supply chain. With the blockchain technology of textile-chain.it we can do it.

The obligation to indicate the origin of wheat for durum wheat semolina pasta, the origin of rice and tomatoes in processed products has been extended until 31 December 2021. The Ministers of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policy, Teresa Bellanova, and Economic Development, Stefano Patuanelli, signed today the Ministerial Decree extending the national measures in force beyond April 1, 2018, the date of entry into force of European Regulation 775. We created the Foodchain platform precisely to provide all players in the supply chain with a tool to bring transparency to the market. The label revolution is near - we want clear and smart labels that allow everyone to see product information in an instant, from their smartphone, via QrCode.

The call for technologies to fight the spread of Covid-19 was closed today. The Minister of Innovation, together with the Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in collaboration with the World Health Organization, asked the Italian business and research world to submit the best available digital solutions for telemedicine and home patient care apps and technologies and strategies based on technologies for "active" monitoring of the contagion risk. 504 proposals for Telemedicine and 319 possible solutions for active monitoring were collected. The evaluation process will now begin. CEO Marco Vitale has decided to offer his country for FREE the use of Foodchain technology (app and platform) for the traceability of medical devices (swabs) used for the contagion monitoring campaign. The information will be digitized with the highest level of digital security currently conceived (on the blockchain of the Quadrans Foundation) and in harmony with privacy regulations guaranteeing anonymity. Among the proposals to the call also the SOSItalia app (info: https://bit.ly/sos-italia) by Associazione AIDR whose aim is to simplify pandemic management in our country, thanks to a system that integrates a self-diagnosis tool, a report of the latest news and official communications, a contagion map and a self-certification management system based on QR Codes. Excellent work Mauro Nicastri, Davide D'Amico, Gianfranco Ossino, Francesco Pagano, Davide Maniscalco and Rosario Fondacaro, with whom we are already working towards a possible integration of the two platforms/apps.

From 1 April 2020, the new EU Reg. 775/18 provides that the origin of the product is NOT to be stated on the label. Roberto Moncalvo of Coldiretti Piemonte makes the issue clear: "We call for a strict European normative on the obligation to indicate the origin of food on the label and for this to become an integral part of the farm to fork strategy of the #GreenNewDeal proposed by the European Commission." With blockchain technology, we can enclose the whole history of a food product in a QrCode, revolutionizing labelling and meeting the expectations of #consumers.

The Coronavirus emergency is taking a hard blow to the entire Made in Italy. In such a delicate moment, it is important to make things clear. How should companies behave? Stefano Patuanelli, Minister of the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) states: "Virus-free certification is not necessary. The company that receives such a request for certification must know that it is an unfair commercial practice". To correctly communicate the origin of the products to protect the Made in Italy trademark, we provide our technology.

Fashion and blockchain? The Goupille project by Stefania Ceccarani is launched. Ceccarani chose Textilechain - a Foodchain project - as a partner to trace all the production processes of her garments. Among the motivations that drove her towards blockchain: to guarantee a sustainable product thanks to a transparent supply chain and to be able to provide the final consumer with a unique QrCode for all her clothing. Also present at the launch were Laura Cappello, President Legal & Governance Board of the Quadrans Foundation and Caterina Ferrara, founder of Blockchain Ladies.

The DDL is ready to arrive at the Council of Ministers: among the main news is the introduction of the crime of agropiracy. "For us, it is particularly important - commented the president of Coldiretti, Ettore Prandini - the inclusion of the concept of protection of the agricultural and food heritage. Because until now one of the regulatory gaps concerned the fact that while in other product sectors the counterfeiting of a trademark is already a crime in itself, in the case of food products, counterfeiting often alters the origin of the products, for example by passing off as Made in Italy what it is not". The solution? Track the food supply chain with blockchain - from the farm to the fork. We are ready!

The list of Italian regions interested in blockchain is steadily growing: every day new laws on this topic are issued. The Campania Region has just approved the law for the traceability of its excellent products for the agri-food and fish industry. "Today an important 'yes' has arrived from the Campania Regional Council Chamber. In fact, today's meeting unanimously approved a proposal for a law that introduces a system of traceability of products of the food supply chain on the regional territory through the management of data in the blockchain, the text was dismissed by the Agriculture Commission. I signed it together with my colleagues Picarone and Oliviero". Maurizio Petracca, President of the Eighth Commission of the Regional Council of Campania, declared.

Alberto Marchetti and Valentina Avantaggiato of Pralina (both users of the Foodchain platform) were among the protagonists of the BTO in Florence. The event, organized at the Stazione Leopolda, addressed, among others, the theme of the blockchain as a tool able to connect products and territories. The relationship between territories and local products, in this case, passes through a mutual enhancement. This is precisely where the blockchain can play an interesting role. Because telling the story of how a product is born, grows, is designed and produced can also pass through the territories, the specificities, the people and the companies that live it. And in the creation of a direct relationship between producer and consumer a bond is established, a relationship that can be functionally enriched with interesting content linked to the products purchased. Carlo Vischi's intervention was also interesting, more focused on Qr Codes - one of the most widespread touchpoints, but less understood and used by consumers. An opportunity that could be better exploited and that could bring benefits both to producers and consumers, finally aware and able to exercise their role of guidance.

Blockchain also made it to one of the most important organic events: BIOFACH2020 - World's Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food at the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre. We participated with our partner Caricom and Città del Bio, while in the RIGA Room on February 12 the meeting "The digitalization of the organic food chain: friend or foe?" was held. «The Internet of things and blockchain could contribute to making the organic food supply chain more efficient and transparent. But the use of such technologies could also have important socio-economic consequences and greater company control. Can digitization take place in line with the principles of organic farming?» We are sure that the use of a public blockchain could solve many of the problems addressed during the interesting debate.

Riseria Masinari is among the realities that are working, with the support of the Lombardy region, on new techniques of rice sowing. Methodologies that guarantee organic product yields equal to those of standard crops. In addition to this, Masinari is committed to refining solutions that can also improve the quality of the product by giving it unique characteristics, such as being free of arsenic, which would make it suitable for feeding children, opening up very interesting commercial prospects. The idea is to breed the seedlings in nurseries and then plant them once they are already big. The next step is the enrichment of selenium, which should eliminate arsenic. The collaboration with Foodchain was born precisely to enhance these unique characteristics as underlined by the owner Giuseppe Zafferoni Masinari: "the blockchain system can be absolutely transparent in identifying any step of the cultivation under examination and this can be an important strong point for the consumer". Obviously, in working with blockchain Masinari has encountered difficulties, mainly represented by the "coordination of agricultural parts, computer parts, and management programs"; difficulties that are largely offset by the advantages, which "are evident for Italian products - continues Masinari - as it is shown that they are really cultivated in our country". Not only that but having to document all the steps and insert a whole series of data in the Foodchain software leads, as a positive externality, to the creation of a database and a deep analysis of the processes that can be definitively optimized.

Every activity related to the traceability of the catch represents an important step in safeguarding biomass and environmental sustainability and the blockchain is an indispensable tool to ensure a correct and timely passing of information from the small supply chain to the consumer. Both are central themes in the European Union's sea-related policies for the next five years when we will try to give meaning to the Green New Deal proposed by the European Commission. "In my role as Vice-President of the Fisheries Commission in the European Parliament, I will support the definition of this path which represents an important step for Ischia, Campania, and Italy". And what Giosi Ferrandino, Vice President of the Fisheries Commission at the European Parliament, said during the presentation in Ischia di Flagchain of the cooperation project "made in Campania" conceived by the Local Action Groups in the fisheries sector (FLAG) "Pesca flegrea", "Litorale Miglio d'Oro" and "Sviluppo Mare Isole di Ischia e Procida". Foodchain is the technological partner of the project that boasts among the most convincing testimonials the starred chef Pasquale Palamaro of "Indaco".

Article 1(520) and (521) of the last financial report provides for the granting to agricultural undertakings of a non-repayable grant of up to 35% of eligible expenditure and subsidized loans not exceeding 60% of eligible expenditure for the financing of initiatives aimed at developing innovative production processes and precision farming or the traceability of products using blockchain technologies. As Foodchain we are able to work in retrofitting on agricultural vehicles, allowing them to write directly into the blockchain, although our app can be used even without IoT implementations. In the meantime, we are waiting for the implementing decrees.
